Sexually Transmitted Infections
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are conditions that can be contracted through various forms of sexual activity, including oral, anal, vaginal, or penile contact. Another frequently used term for STIs is sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). STIs include various types of infections, with common symptoms including sensations of burning, itching, or unusual discharge in the genital region. It’s important to note that some STIs can be asymptomatic, meaning individuals may not experience any noticeable symptoms.
STIs are common and highly transmissible. Individuals who are sexually active can unknowingly harbor and transmit an STI. That’s why it’s important to talk to a doctor about getting tested if you’re having sex.
TALK.
Talk honestly with your partner(s) and your doctor about sexual health and STIs.
TEST
Get tested. It’s the only way to know if you have an STI. Some STIs don’t have symptoms, so you might have one and not know it.
TREAT
If you test positive for an STI, work with your doctor to get the right treatment.
Contracting an STD is not the end. Many STDs are curable, and all are treatable with timely intervention.
